2nd Chance Indiana Receives Grant (And a lot more!)
This is big news for young people coming out of incarceration! The RESTART grant from the Department of Labor is making it possible for 2nd Chance Indiana to provide job counseling services to young reentrants, connecting them to second-chance employers, and to assess the impact of job preparation training, mentoring, counseling, and transportation to and from work, until they can afford their own reliable vehicle.
Through the efforts of Keys2Work, RecycleForce, and 2nd Chance Indiana, these reentrants will have the tools, education, and job connections they need to find stability through a good job, with access to counselors who will be there to assist them along the way.
Also, this month, 2nd Chance Indiana has bicycles! Yes..we've long worked with some of the bus lines to provide free passes to people as they readjust to a working environment, but often the bus line stops a mile or more short of the employer's actual location, and it can be a very long walk to get to work. So, our intrepid 2nd Chance Indiana Transportation group has applied for and received a number of bikes that can be loaded on a bus, and then used at the end of the route to peddle the rest of the way to work. Some very happy folks have received the bikes!
Meanwhile, fifteen Televerede-trained volunteers are currently working 12-15 hours a week, combing through 2nd Chance Indiana data files to fill in any missing information in an effort to support the work we do. Our thanks to these volunteers and to Televerde for its support!
And, an outreach event at New Zion Temple Church provided a meaningful opportunity to connect with residents and partners from the northwest Indianapolis community. 2CIN's Director of Employment Services Molly Oliver and Job Counselor Kendra Walker engaged with local families, faith leaders, and neighborhood organizations throughout the event.
And there's more: The IMPD Community Day at the East District on July 7th was a highly successful and well‑attended event, bringing together residents, families, and local organizations for an afternoon of connection and collaboration.
Finally, a scientist has revealed a plan that could rehabilitate a convicted person in minutes, instead of spending years or decades in prison. His concept is called "Cognify." Read Nancy's Blog post! (It's fascinating!)
