Nancy Cotterill co-founded 2nd Chance Indiana (as UNITE INDY) in late 2016. She was editor and later publisher of Indianapolis Business Journal, and then created a not-for-profit online news outlet for the four million wheelchair users in the U.S. As an award-winning journalist, Nancy uses her talents to promote efforts to fight the causes of overall poverty throughout our area while working to spread the specific message that second chance employment is lowering recidivism, changing lives, and raising families out of poverty.

A prison is a loud and edgy place with a powerful clique, just like high school, but much more dangerous. It is also a place filled with pain, regret, and unresolved trauma for many inmates. Studies have shown that forgiveness training has changed lives. Could it help inmates to break free from their past traumas and heal from within?


Between 1972 and 2009, the U.S. prison population grew by almost 700%. But in 2024 it has come down to around 1.25 million. It's still a lot. But at least now, people are realizing that we have an overabundance of lifers in our prisons and too many with insanely long sentences that are wasting taxpayer money and robbing reformed people of any chance of experiencing a renewed life.
